HabitAT INSTALLATION

Transforming Lawns Into Yards

Spadefoot Design and Construction will help you identify what native habitats are possible in your yard, given soil, light, and moisture, and your own goals.

Do you want a native pollinator garden?   What native grasses, bushes and shrubs and trees can be planted together where there is now lawn?

Shocking to know, but most suburban yards these days are less than 25% native.    The lawn, the privet, and the English Ivy (along with the mute swans and the starlings and sparrows) were all imported here by the British.  The Dutch brought crocuses, dandelions, daffodils, and of course tulips.

None of the plants contribute much to the local ecosystem or food web because the native insects and birds don’t recognize them as food, and haven’t evolved to develop the particular digestive system required to eat that plant.  As for the birds, they drive out our native species.  Between the loss of plant habitat and the explosion of non native bird populations, we are seeing a collapse of songbird populations worldwide — 1% fewer per year every year since 1964.

What if everyone were to allocate a part of their yards to native plantings?   Biologists like Douglas Tallamy and the late E.O. Wilson stipulate that it is not only a good idea to plant native, it is essential that we do so.   If we do not restore habitat in sufficient quantities (and quality), we will all feel the full brunt of what is a global wave of extinction, brought on by habitat destruction on a global scale brought on by humans.

It is Spadefoot’s mission to start to reverse that trend, one yard at a time.   We can “install” habitat on your property that will attract specific types of birds.  Plant what they or their food will eat, and watch small miracles occur right in your yard!

Spadefoot is also ready to work with municipalities and other environmental organizations to tackle larger projects.   We create and revive nature sanctuaries.   We turn invasive choked public parks into vibrant islands of wildlife.

In the age of the sterile, lifeless lawn, your plantings will change how people understand beauty. There is no tract of land too small to make a big difference. A 10’X10’ pollinator garden, for instance both creates essential habitat while also creating a place of wonder. Native flowers, birds, bees, and butterflies make for a statement: This matters.
